Registration is ongoing for a Florida First Detector training, scheduled for June 3 at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Everglades Research and Education Center. It will last from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The free Florida First Detector training will highlight identification and management for pests of concern that could impact sugarcane, rice and leafy vegetables. How can you identify athropods and pathogens of concern in sugarcane, rice and leafy vegetables? How to deal with regulatory issues? What are examples of first detections in South Florida?
Different perspectives will also be provided, including from growers, crop consultants, county agents and regulatory agencies. They will discuss early detection, subsequent actions and potential possibilities of crop insurance and quarantine endorsements for impacted producers.
Growers, consultants and county Extension agents are encouraged to attend and participate in the round-table discussion during lunch.
A similar meeting will occur at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in August for pests of fruiting vegetables.
