Drought-like conditions are worsening and spreading across the Southeast, especially in southern Alabama, northern Florida and southwest Georgia. According to Thursday’s release of the U.S. Drought Monitor, extreme and severe drought conditions are being reported in southwest Alabama.
The worst conditions are concentrated in Mobile County and in parts of Escambia, Conecuh and Monrore counties. Severe conditions start in Washington and Choctaw counties and spread east to Covington and Geneva counties. Moderate dry conditions are seen across the southern portion of the state and in northeast Alabama, including Dekalb, Jackson, Marshall and Madison counties.
Georgia’s dry areas remain sporadic across various areas of the state, including moderate conditions in northwest Georgia in Dade, Walker, Catoosa and Chattooga counties. The driest area is in southwest Georgia, with Seminole, Decatur and portions of Early, Miller, Baker and Mitchell and Colquitt counties being moderately dry.
The Florida Panhandle continues to be dry. The drought-like conditions, which range from abnormal to severe, start in Escambia County and stretch to Leon and Wakulla counties. An extreme drought remains in counties in southwest Florida, including Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties.
The northwest area of South Carolina is mostly abnormal dry. Multiple areas of North Carolina are abnormally dry.
