The Alabama Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (AFVGA) seeks nominations for its annual awards program. Nominations are due Nov. 1, while the winners will be recognized at the AFVGA Annual Conference in Gulf Shores, Alabama, on Feb. 4-6.

Blake Thaxton

Blake Thaxton, AFVGA Executive Director, talked about this year’s awards and the process in selecting the winners.

“This is the first year we’ve done it that way. We’ve always just had the board select folks, but the board wanted to take nominations this year,” Thaxton said. “The Exceptional Achievement Award is basically like our Farmer of the Year type of award. The Service to Horticulture would be like Extension, researchers, government folks. Partner of the Year would be more industry, professional that are outstanding in serving the industry.

“It’s just our way in recognizing individuals who do outstanding work in the industry and encouraging their leadership and recognizing their achievements through their careers thus far.”

The AFVGA Annual Conference and Trade Show is held every year in February in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The AFVGA is an affiliate of the Alabama Farmers Federation, the state’s largest farm organization representing more than 330,000 member families.
