Florida blueberry harvests have ended for the 2022 season, but management continues this summer. According to University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, growers need to be actively scouting for algal stem blotch.
The disease is significant on southern highbush blueberries. It will stunt growth and cause leaf yellowing, as well as increased susceptibility to Botryosphaeria.
Producers need to prune out canes infected with algal stem blotch if the disease is observed.
Other Diseases
Growers can also apply Ridomil to prevent Phytophthora root rot. Growers should begin monthly thorough-irrigation or banded bed applications of a phosphorous acid product if bacterial wilt is a problem.
Pest Control
It is also imperative the producers scout for flea beetles, larval citrus root weevil, larval flatheaded borer, chilli thrips and southern red mites. Apply suggested control measures if the pests are present.
Leaf Samples
Leaves should also be collected for tissue nutrient analysis. Select samples from fully expanded leaves in the middle of a recent summer growth flush.
Weed Control
Farmers should apply a post-emergence herbicide if weeds are at a size that will hinder the bush growth.
