South Florida Pest and Disease Hotline: Whitefly Infestations Vary Across Region

Whiteflies cause feeding injury issues in vegetables and transmit two new viruses: cucurbit leaf crumple virus and cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus. Vegetables like squash, zucchini, cucumber, cantaloupe and snap beans are highly susceptible to these viruses. Commercial cultivars that have resistance or tolerance to these pathogens are not available.

Whitefly infestations vary among vegetable fields in southern Florida, according to the South Florida Pest and Disease Hotline.

Scouting reports show low populations of whitefly adults on tomatoes in central Florida. Low to moderate populations are reported in cucumber, and moderate populations are observed in early fall melons.

In Southwest Florida, the recent rainfall has helped to lower whitefly populations. Overall, they remain at a low level. Though populations in tomatoes are low, they are starting to increase. Populations have increased over the past week in early watermelons.

Whitefly numbers are low in beans but high in okra fields in Homestead, Florida. There are confirmed results of silverleaf due to whiteflies in some cucurbit crops.
