Due to a high level of research possibilities in the Suwannee Valley area, another location has been added to the North Florida Research and Education Center.
The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Suwannee Valley Agricultural Extension Center will become the North Florida Research and Education Center at Suwannee Valley (NFREC-SV), said Bob Hochmuth, assistant director of NFREC-SV and regional Extension agent for vegetable crops.
This location will be the third NFREC location, joining centers in Quincy and Marianna.
Many of the research possibilities at the new NFREC location involve water and nutrient management. Hochmuth said this location is important because it is the only one in the Suwannee River Water Management District. “A lot of these large research programs have to be done at that center, and so the research pressure on that unit grew exponentially,” he said.
Growth and interest in this area have given many opportunities to researchers and allowed the center to become a part of the NFREC. Hochmuth said this merger brings the center, along with its resources, to help support area researchers. This will allow the center to fulfill both its Extension and research roles, he said.
“We’re thrilled about the opportunity to be part of an FREC and to be able to grow as a unit and serve the many researchers that are currently dependent upon that unit to conduct their research,” Hochmuth concluded.
