The Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association (FFVA) issued a statement following Tuesday morning’s fatal bus crash involving Florida farmworkers in west Marion County.
“We were devastated to learn of Tuesday morning’s fatal crash involving a bus transporting farmworkers, and all of us at the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association (FFVA) are lifting these individuals and their families in our prayers,” the statement read. “Not only are farmworkers critical to helping feed consumers across the U.S. and world, but they are valued members of our farming communities and families, working alongside growers each and every day.
“Above all else, there is nothing more important to us than the safety and wellbeing of Florida’s farmworkers. We are grateful to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, first responders, healthcare workers and many others in the community who are doing all they can to care for the farmworkers and bus driver affected in this tragedy and to hold the individual responsible accountable for his actions.”
Eight farm workers were killed and many more injured in the crash involving a bus and Ford Ranger.
The FFVA also offered clarification on prior news coverage of its comments regarding seat belt requirements for employer vehicles used for farmworkers.
“FFVA did not oppose the proposed seat belt requirement. Rather, we submitted comments as part of the rulemaking process as the Department of Labor (DOL) developed the new rule. Specifically, our comments raised concern for how the DOL would enforce compliance, and we offered suggestions to make it a meaningful and workable regulation,” the statement continued.
