In this month’s sneak peek, the May issue of Specialty Crop Grower Magazine highlights peaches and how one Georgia grower is seeing strong production. Lane Southern Orchards in Central Georgia is one of the state’s top peach producers. Farm manager Tyler Wainwright discusses production and the secrets to his company’s success, including not having production all in one area and knowing where to plant new trees.
In other peach news, breeders at Clemson and University of Georgia are working to develop varieties that are suited for the Southeast climate and resistant to various pests. University breeders highlight some of those new rootstocks and varieties.
Southeast peach growers are aiming to avoid another bout with bacterial spot disease this year. Their efforts have been aided by a prolonged dry period across the region. The disease was devastating in 2025. UGA Extension fruit disease specialist Phil Brannen said wet conditions can trigger infections. Producers should operate on a strict spraying schedule, every seven to 10 days.

In other news, industry experts and growers across the region should mark their calendars for Aug. 12-13 for the Citrus & Specialty Crop Expo. They should also note the new location at the waterfront Caloosa Sound Convention Center in Fort Myers, Florida.
An emphasis has been placed on making specialty crop insurance more friendly. Congresswoman Kat Cammack (FL-3) hosted a listening session that allowed growers to voice their concerns. Regina Thomas, senior vice president with the Farm Credit of Central Florida, was also present and said there’s a need for more engagement and communication.
Also highlighted is an update on the farm bill and how the U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee voted to advance a bill to the full house for a vote.
