Whitefly populations are increasing in South Florida, according to the most recent release of the South Florida Pest and Disease Hotline.
Multiple reports indicate low to moderate whitefly populations in melons, tomatoes and snap beans in Southwest Florida. Whitefly infestations in melons is concerning, not just because of the risk of virus but in some populations, levels are high enough to create honeydew and sooty mold.
Dak Seal, entomologist at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Tropical Research and Education Center, has reported low to high whitefly population levels, depending on the crop, in Homestead, Florida. High population levels were observed in eggplant and squash.
Low levels of whiteflies were reported on cucumber, squash and eggplant on the east coast.
Low population levels in tomatoes were reported in central Florida, though activity is increasing in melons.
