The five-year average price for pecans, from 2019 to 2023 was $1.69 a pound, which was the market price growers received last year. It does not appear to be going up any time soon, explains Lenny Wells, University of Georgia Extension pecan specialist.

“Average price last year across all varieties season long was $1.69. That’s a lot lower than we need it to be. Ideally, we’d have it up there around $2 a pound. All the different market forces right now have pushed that down,” Wells said. “It’s hard to say what the price is going to do. I would not plan on a high price.”

Wells discussed pecan prices during the UGA Pecan School held in conjunction with the Georgia Pecan Growers Association meeting in Perry, Georgia, on March 20. Wells emphasized the importance of reducing input costs to better maximize what prices are. “We can’t control price, but we can control the inputs to some extent. We’ve just got to work with what we can control,” Wells said.
