A legislative leader said farm bill 1.0 was part of the Big Beautiful Bill that was recently passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump. The second part is currently being worked on, according to Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-15), chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture.
He spoke about the farm bill at the Southern Peanut Growers Conference in Panama City Beach, Florida, on July 25.
“There are two divisions but one farm bill in the end. The second part of the farm bill 2.0, we’re currently working on. If people want to know what we’ll be doing, all they need to do is go to the Farm, Food and National Security Act of 2024 and start drawing a line through everything we accomplished in the One Big Beautiful Bill. Whatever is left is what we’ll work on,” Thompson said. “I think it’s going to be very bi-partisan, a lot of refinement of legislative language and programs. I think we’re going to need somewhere under $8 billion.
“I’m hoping to see a markup out of committee maybe by the end of September.”
The farm bill is a piece of legislation that is scheduled to be renewed every five years. President Trump signed the Farm Bill into law on Dec. 20, 2018. But it expired at the end of September 2023. The 2018 farm bill totaled $800 billion. The next farm bill could approach $1.5 trillion.
